On Nov 6 2026 the Technical University of Munich (TUM) disclosed an IT security incident. Unknown attackers compromised the myTUM portal and stole passwords for the central TUM login (login.tum.de, TUMonline and related systems) for everyone registered with myTUM, including a system-administrator credential for TUMonline. Those credentials were used to attack the central campus management system TUMonline, which TUM then took offline. Affected data for all impacted people may include the TUM account password, name, home address and date of birth; employees may also have work address and work phone exposed; students may also have student ID, degree program and semester count exposed. After reviewing largely logged TUMonline access, TUM currently assumes grades and college applications were not compromised and is still investigating. TUM suspended affected accounts, reported the incident to the Bavarian State Commissioner for Data Protection, filed a criminal complaint, and told users to change their TUM password (options by Monday), enable MFA, and change the same password elsewhere if reused. MFA-protected accounts were protected from this attack.
Why this severity: Central university login passwords stolen for all myTUM registrants and used to attack TUMonline; PII (name, address, DOB) may be exposed; grades/applications currently assumed not taken; MFA accounts protected
